Slumdog millionaire

One main conflict in the film “Slumdog millionaire” directed by Danny Boyle is the conflict between Prem Kumar and Jamal Malik. This conflict continues throughout the whole film because Jamal wants to be on the show because he thinks his true love would be watching the show “who wants to be a millionaire. On the other hand Prem doesn’t  want Jamal to win because he himself used to be a slumdog and wants to be the only slumdog to have ever  achieved this accolade.

One technique used in the film to help us understand the conflict between Jamal and Prem was the use of cinematography. There were three major ones in the beginning of the movie. The first camera angle is the ‘over the shoulder’ shot. This shot was used when Prem and Jamal were just about to enter the stage. It shows me the contrast between the two. Prem is very confident and cocky while Jamal is very nervous and at all confident and you can see this by the fact that Jamal was not saying anything was not saying anything but just gazed into the distance and when Prem asked him “are you ready” and Jamal just gazed out as id he was dazed and confused. The second camera angle is the use f the shot ‘crane shot’ this shot shows you the atmosphere and it makes you feel like if it’s held in an arena. This shot is a very good shot because of the fact that it makes you feel like if it’s held in an arena but it also shows u the tension and the size of the place to make u feel amazed at the size. The last shot that was used that was used was used was the midshot this shot is the best out of the three because it shows you the tension between Jamal and Prem and the contrast between the two buy Jamal being on the edge of his seat as if he is real nervous and Prem being casual and relaxed on the seat as if he has already one something.

Another technique that was used in the film “slumdog millionaire” was the acting style and dialogue. Prem was sarcastic cocky and mean by him insulting Jamal like when he said “you’re a phone basher?” or when he said “oh you’re a chai-wallah” which means he goes around picking up orders for tea and handing them out. Jamal’s acting style and dialogue was different compared to Prem’s . Jamal was nervous but yet confident when answering the questions like when Prem asked him “who was the third musketeer?” Jamal gingerly answered “A” and Prem said “why?” Jamal responded with “why not?” with confidence. The different acting styles helped me understand the conflict because it showed me the difference between the two roles and how they were portrayed in the film.

The director Danny Boyle also used music and sound effects to show the conflict between the two characters. Music and sound effects were in the opening scene when Jamal was about to walk onstage. There was the sound of a ticking clock. This showed that Jamal was up against the clock and it was also used to raise the tension levels a lot. Another time music and sound effects were used to show more of the conflict between Jamal and the show host is when they were walking onto the stage together and the crowd started to clap. This contributed to the tension of the scene and the idea of a contest between the two characters. Both of these sounds also go hand in hand with the the cinematography and clearly shows the conflict between Jamal and the show host.
